New leadership arrangements at the Welsh Ambulance Service

THE Welsh Ambulance Service has bid farewell to Chief Executive Tracy Myhill after three and a half years at the helm.

Tracy has been appointed Chief Executive at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board and has taken up post today (Thursday 1 February, 2018).

Patsy Roseblade, the Trust’s Executive Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive (pictured, right), will be the Trust’s Interim Chief Executive.

Patsy, who joined WAST in 2012 and has worked in the NHS at a senior level for 18 years, has also taken up post today.

Meanwhile, Medical Director Brendan Lloyd will be the Trust’s Deputy Chief Executive.

Brendan began his career as a GP, and served as Medical Director at Cardiff and Powys Local Health Boards before joining the Welsh Ambulance Service in 2014.

Patsy said: “This is the beginning of a new chapter for the Welsh Ambulance Service, and I very much look forward to building on the sterling work led by Tracy.

“I am honoured to be taking on this role and will represent and lead this organisation with enthusiasm and complete commitment.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time with colleagues in anticipation of my new role, including out on the road and within the Clinical Contact Centres, and will meet many more colleagues in the coming months.

“I want colleagues to feel assured that we will maintain momentum and continue to make positive progress as we strive to deliver our best for our patients and our staff and volunteers.

“It’s hugely important that we continue to progress as a clinically-led organisation, and so Brendan as Deputy Chief Executive is an excellent fit.”

Brendan (pictured, left) added: “I’m delighted to have been appointed Deputy Chief Executive, and grateful for the opportunity to help Patsy steer the organisation through the next phase of our transformation journey.”

In addition, after four and a half years in the role, Chair Mick Giannasi will be leaving the organisation when his tenure comes to an end on 31 March, 2018.

A recruitment process will be held to appoint a substantive replacement in the autumn.

In the interim, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care has asked our current Vice-Chair, Martin Woodford, to step up into the Chair’s role.

Martin who joined the service in 2014, has more than 30 years’ experience in the local government and healthcare environment.

He was Chief Executive of Powys Healthcare Trust prior to re-organisation, and more recently Chief Executive of the former Hereford Hospital Trust and its successor organisation Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Mick, who was recently awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List, said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am to leave the Welsh Ambulance Service after four incredible years.

“The fact that I’ve been with the Trust beyond my original tenure is testament to what a great organisation it is and how far it has come.

“I’ll be leaving you in the safe and capable hands of Martin Woodford, who I know will continue to provide first class counsel to the Board.”

Martin (pictured, right) added: “Mick is a much-respected leader, who has demonstrated an exceptional contribution to our ambulance service during the course of his tenure.

“Four years ago, this was an organisation facing considerable difficulties, but Mick has facilitated change that has led to its complete transformation.

“While Mick’s are big shoes to fill, I look forward to embracing the challenge.”

Notes to Editors
With the recruitment of a substantive Chief Executive expected to begin in February, additional interim leadership arrangements have also been made for this period:

  • Chris Turley, currently Deputy Director of Finance, has been appointed Interim Director of Finance, ICT and Health Informatics.
  • Hannah Evans, Director of Planning and Performance, will be the executive lead for the Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) during the interim period with Nick Smith remaining as Deputy Director for NEPTS but taking a more prominent role within the Executive Team and the Trust Board.
  • Director of Operations Richard Lee will Chair the Vehicle Procurement Board as well as take up the Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for phase two of the Computer Aided Dispatch project.
  • Meanwhile, the Capital and Estates functions moves permanently from the Finance Directorate to the Planning and Performance Directorate with effect from 1 February, 2018.
